MINNESOTA WIRE & CABLE CO. PARTNERS WITH WISCONSIN’S NANORITE CENTER

St. Paul, MN, 03/21/08 – Minnesota Wire & Cable Co. (MWCC) – Minnesota Wire has signed a contract for services with the Nanorite Innovation Center in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.  The agreement is central to the company’s embrace of nanotechnology through its ongoing research and development (R&D) programs with the federal government.  The advanced technology Nanorite facility is just blocks from Minnesota Wire’s new 58,000 square foot manufacturing center in Eau Claire.

MWCC’s maturing R&D efforts have netted nearly $4 million in high technology research grants that are helping the company to develop both as an industry leader in signal integrity, and as new material and process innovators for wire, cable and electrical interconnect assemblies.  Several programs that have significant commercial applications have necessitated the need to develop new techniques for the extrusion of shielding and potentially conductors, using carbon nanotubes, including:  Cobra, a  grant from the U.S. Army’s Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC); Komodo, “stretchy wire” from the Army’s Natick Soldier Center; and OrbWeaver, for fatigue resistant wire from the Air Force Test Directorate.

The Nanorite Center will be crucial to Minnesota Wire’s R&D programs in the time ahead, principally for the testing and validation of nanoscale products and processes.  Built to accommodate the development of business start-ups for nanotechnology, microfabrication, and other advanced technologies, the Nanorite facility is the first of its kind in the region.  Details on the center can be found on their website, www.nanorite.org.

“We are thrilled to have Minnesota Wire as a partner at Nanorite,” said the center’s manager, Pam Owen.  “This company is illustrative of the exciting new possibilities that exist for innovative advances in nanotechnology – and it’s all happening right here in Eau Claire.  There are very few centers in the country that combine advanced machining with nanotechnology, so this is a tremendous opportunity for companies in the area to advance.”
